Slew of Call Sweeps on XLK Totaling $15M Hit the Tape
XLK 142.5C expiring 6/17/2025

XLK saw a cluster of large, long‑dated call sweeps at the 142.5 strike expiring June 17, 2027. High volume relative to open interest and multimillion‑dollar premium outlay were detected. This signals aggressive positioning in the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF.

All four entries are XLK 142.5 strike call options with the same expiration of 06/17/202. This indicates that they are part of one coordinated options block rather than unrelated trades. The spot price at the time of these prints ranged around 146.15–146.31. This deems the calls are slightly in‑the‑money, pairing upside exposure with some intrinsic value in a major technology ETF.

Trade Details

The top line shows total daily volume (VOL) of 7,639 contracts (at the time of the trades) versus open interest (OI) of 140 contracts, producing a V/OI ratio of about 54:1. This unusually elevated and characteristic of fresh positioning rather than simple closing activity. The other lines list partial volumes (5,190, 3,763, 5,190, etc.). However, since they refer to the same contract, the 7,639 figure is the relevant total and highlights that the day’s trading overwhelmed existing interest by a wide margin.

Individual prints show contract sizes of 2,251, 1,032, 1,688, and 1,447 contracts, with trade prices around 23.35–23.45 per contract. This cluster of prints led to premiums of roughly 5.3M, 2.4M, 3.9M, and 3.4M dollars respectively. These are labeled as “Sweep” buy orders and mostly tagged “Above” or “Ask,”. This implies the buyer was willing to pay near or above the ask across multiple exchanges to quickly secure exposure, another sign of urgency and conviction behind the bet.

Volume and Open Interest Data

XLK 142.5C expiring 6/17/2025 Volume and Open Interest Data

The chart and historical data confirm that XLK 142.5C 06/17/2027 experienced a major spike in volume on 12/11/25. 7,658 contracts traded against an open interest of only 140 contracts. This creates an extremely elevated V/OI ratio of more than 54×, signaling that nearly all of this activity represents new positions rather than closing trades.

The contract’s price also rose sharply toward the $25 level as the heavy buying came in. This highlights aggressive demand for this long-dated LEAP call. Overall, the sudden surge in volume paired with minimal pre-existing open interest indicates fresh, sizable positioning, likely from institutional buyers making a long-term bet on continued volatility in the technology sector.

Trade Side Distribution

The trade side distribution for the XLK 142.5C 06/17/2027 contracts shows overwhelmingly buy-side and aggressive biased order flow. A combined $12.6M (75%) of the premium was executed above the ask. This indicates that traders were willing to pay up to secure fills. This is typical behavior of urgency and strong conviction.

Another $4.2M (25%) hit the ask, while 0% of the flow occurred at the bid, mid, or below. This means every dollar of trading volume came from buyers lifting liquidity, with none from sellers hitting bids. Taken together, the data reflects exceptionally assertive buying pressure, consistent with institutional accumulation and high conviction in long-term volatility on XLK.
